(8 years of service)

Hello there, my name is Kyle! I’ve been with FGL Sports since high school at  several different stores, and I am now working  to become a SGM (Store General Manager). If you asked me five or six years ago, “Kyle, how long will you be here?” I would have told you not for very long. I was 18 years old, part-time with Atmosphere, but that’s when things really got exciting for my career.

You may be thinking, “Wait, hold on a minute! You haven’t even told us why you started working for the company!” Okay, okay. To start that story, we have to go back to nine year old me. Growing up I always liked being outside, but my calling to the mountains didn’t start until just after my ninth birthday. I was invited to join in on a bike trip; from Jasper to Banff. Now, that’s a long way to ride a bike for a child, 288 km to be exact. Needless to say it was not easy. I clearly remember climbing a huge hill and getting to the top, totally spent, and then looking up and…wow. You feel like you’re on top of the world. It was an amazing trip, aside from when it got so cold near the Columbia Icefields that my hands nearly froze to my handlebars. They had to pick me up in a vehicle and drive me the rest of the way to the campsite. I ended up missing only 4km of the whole trip. Determined to do the whole thing I did same trip four years in a row. As we left Banff to head home, my love for the mountains would carry on.

That was a bit of a long winded story but there is a point. Years later at 17, I was nervous and on the job hunt. I had never heard of what was then called Coast Mountain Sports. As soon as I walked in and saw the product, talked to the staff, and felt the atmosphere (pun intended), I knew this was the place for me. I applied and got a job in the Hardgoods department; and I immediately felt at home. I was constantly encouraged to grow as a sales person and as a leader, and my coworkers quickly became my second family.  My boss believed that to be a good leader in the store you have to be comfortable in more than one area, so I was able to move around between shipping, Hardgoods and Clothing.I took that to heart and have now worked in multiple departments and held various positions including Assistant Manager, Clothing DSM, and now manager of the Atmosphere department at St. Albert Sport Chek.

Sport Chek has developed not only how I work, but how I live. My job has encouraged me to live a healthy active lifestyle and share that with our customers. Making that difference in other people’s lives is exactly why I come to work and why it feels so good when they come back and tell me about their latest adventure. I am truly excited to see what the future holds for me at FGL Sports. We aren’t about selling the next tent, or outfitting someone with a new track suit. We are about inspiring Canadians, and that’s where the real passion lies.
